Many things in life are completely outside of our control.
A relationship changes. Money gets tight. Something breaks. Plans fall apart. Someone disappoints us. Or maybe something as ridiculous as a pack of cookies disappears when we were really looking forward to eating them.
Our instinct may be to resist—to fight what happened, wish it were different, or become consumed by something we simply can’t change. But believe it or not, how we respond to those moments can dramatically influence how we experience them.
In this episode of The Perceptual Shift Show, James and Robbie explore the power of reframing change—not simply tolerating or accepting it, but becoming curious about it and even inviting it in. By remaining open to the opportunities, lessons, growth, and possibilities change might bring, we can dramatically alter our experience of it.
James and Robbie explore how curiosity can replace fear, why trusting the process can create greater ease, and how adaptability may be one of our greatest strengths. Learning to meet change with flexibility, dignity, grace, and even humor can completely change the way we move through it.
They also look at the price we pay when we resist what has already happened. Robbie shares how something as small as nicking a zit while shaving cost him 45 minutes of serenity—that was 45 minutes he could have spent loving his life.
And James shares the story of the “heart” he left for Courtney after power washing her walkway—and how it unexpectedly became a place for her to step out of some uncomfortable feelings and back into love.
Stopping the fight doesn’t mean pretending that everything that happens is wonderful. It means recognizing that even when we don’t get to choose what happens, we can choose how we perceive it. We can stay curious. Adapt. Trust the process. Look for the opportunity. And expand our awareness to see the good that emerges as a result of change.
Because it’s not a question of whether change is coming. The real question is: when it does come, are we willing to stop fighting it?
“Change is always a-coming. Change doesn’t take a day off.”
