Life is going to knock us off balance sometimes. The question isn’t whether it happens—it’s how we respond when it does.
Resilience is our ability to adapt, recover, and keep moving forward in the face of adversity. And the good news is that resilience isn’t something we either have or don’t have. It’s a skill we can strengthen through intentional practice.
In this episode of The Perceptual Shift Show, James and Robbie explore five practical ways to become more resilient: cultivating a growth mindset, practicing self-compassion, staying connected to supportive people, focusing on your strengths, and maintaining healthy habits.
They talk about learning to see challenges as opportunities rather than roadblocks, changing the way we speak to ourselves when we make mistakes, and surrounding ourselves with people who encourage us rather than pull us down.
James also shares the daily affirmation he uses to open himself to abundance—and what happened when he continued practicing it during the pandemic, when his publishing business and four magazines were suddenly lost. In the midst of tremendous uncertainty, he tried to stay open to possibilities rather than allowing fear to dictate what came next.
Resilience also means recognizing what we allow into our emotional lives.
“Don’t you think drama is highly overrated?” — Robbie
Fear, anger and frustration can be contagious. But so can love, kindness and gratitude. We may not get to choose everything that happens around us, but we can become much more intentional about what we allow to pull us down.
Because bouncing back doesn’t mean nothing affects us. It means learning how to move through difficult experiences without remaining stuck in them—and discovering that we may be stronger and more adaptable than we realized.
