It’s easy to be grateful when life is going your way. But what about when life changes in ways you didn’t ask for, didn’t expect, and definitely don’t like?
That’s when living in the attitude of gratitude takes guts.
In this episode of The Perceptual Shift Show, James and Robbie explore how gratitude can help us navigate difficult change—and why the way we respond may determine whether we evolve through it or devolve into fear, resentment, defensiveness, and old patterns.
Being grateful doesn’t mean pretending something painful is wonderful. It means becoming willing to look at what’s happening differently.
James and Robbie share four practical ways to cultivate gratitude during difficult change: keeping a gratitude journal, expressing appreciation, finding silver linings, and reflecting on growth.
They also talk about how changing our perspective can help us stop reacting automatically. Instead of assuming criticism is an attack, could it be an opportunity to grow? Could the other person be struggling themselves? Could there be another explanation we simply haven’t considered?
And sometimes gratitude is about recognizing our own growth—celebrating the moments when we didn’t take the bait, didn’t react the way we used to, or managed to turn a difficult situation into an opportunity.
“Plug into the goodness of the universe.” — James
Because change is inevitable. The question is whether we’re going to let it take us backward—or use it to become a better version of ourselves.
